Yes, visitors can marry in Ontario

There is no residency, citizenship or medical requirement to marry in Ontario.

The City of Toronto issues licences to anyone 16 or older, whether they live in Ontario or are visiting; applicants under 18 need written consent from their legal guardians (City of Toronto). The licence is valid anywhere in Ontario for three months.

Plan it in four steps

  1. Book your licence appointment. In Toronto: $180, at City Hall or the North York Civic Centre, by appointment. Complete the online application first, print it, and sign it in ink. One of you must attend in person.
  2. Bring the right ID. Each of you needs two original, valid, government-issued IDs showing your legal name and date of birth: a passport plus a driver's licence or birth certificate usually works. Photocopies, expired ID and health cards aren't accepted. Non-English ID needs a certified translation.
  3. Previously married? Bring an original divorce certificate. If the divorce was granted outside Canada, you need Ontario's Foreign Divorce Authorization first, including a legal opinion letter from an Ontario lawyer. Allow up to 4 weeks (Ontario.ca).
  4. Book us and your witnesses. We come to your hotel, a park, a restaurant or a civic centre chamber, any day of the week.

Taking your marriage home

After the ceremony we submit your licence to the Province. Once it's registered, order your Ontario marriage certificate online; premium service ($45) delivers by courier in about 5 business days after processing (Ontario.ca). If your home country asks for an authenticated document, ask about an apostille for your Ontario certificate.

Timing tip: the certificate can only be ordered after registration, which takes time. If you'll fly home soon after the wedding, order online from home; you don't need to be in Ontario to receive it.

Questions Couples Ask

Do we need to be Canadian residents to marry in Toronto?

No. Ontario has no residency or citizenship requirement for marriage.

Is a Toronto marriage recognized in the United States?

Marriages legally performed in Ontario are generally recognized in the U.S. and many other countries, but rules vary. Check with your home state or country about what document they need, usually the Ontario marriage certificate.

Can you come to our hotel?

Yes. Hotel rooms, lobbies, rooftops and nearby parks are all common. Ask your hotel about any rules for small ceremonies.

How far ahead should we plan?

Book your licence appointment as soon as your dates are set; appointments can fill. You can book us earlier and confirm the time once your licence date is known.
